Hello again! Today we are taking a quick and easy look at Optical Illusion art, aka Op Art for short. In truth a lot of art relies on creating the optical illusion of three-dimesions on a two -dimensional surface. You can create these effects in lots of different ways. Today we are going to make a simple op art work which uses the direction of line to make it look like an opbject is popping right off the page. For my instructions I am using a simple circle but this would work for any shape so try it with leaves, flowers, stars, your hand, a paw print, whatever you can think of! Step 1: Draw out your design on a piece of paper. DRAW BIG! Small drawings are hard to fill in.
2. Using a ruler or straight edge draw vertical lines all across your background. Leave your design alone for now.
3. On your design CURVE the line around the object Think of what a piece of yarn would look like if you wrapped it around a ball. That is what a line will do when wrapped around the object.
4. Now we will use our ruler or straight edge to draw in horizontal lines all across the background. Again, skip over your object.
5. Stretch those lines over your objet, see how they curve.
6. Now the fun part, Coloring! You can choose any color or colors you like. To keep this simple for instruction I'll just do a black and white checkerboard pattern.
7. Take your time inside your object, especially if you have a pattern you are using so you don't get mixed up.
Some students like to fill in their object first instead of their background. Here is an alternative way of creating this Pop Out Op Art.
Here is one of my Drawings. You can color flat, or add shading like I did to help really make your objects POP! You can see how I put in a light reflection on top and a darker shadow on the bottom.
You can get really creative and Add cut off objects, lots of them, or just a few. The design and challenge level is up to you!
