Personal baggage... it isn't made of just good or bad and everyone carries their experiences with them. Where you are from. Where you've been. The people you value most. The people who are no longer here. Your childhood dreams and fears. Your desires for the present and future.
Challenge. Each student received an identical cardboard box and a question sheet to get the started thinking. They sketched out ideas before discussing with others in the group and one on one with me. Finally materials are gathered and the results are as unique as the individuals themselves.
Top left:
Huge video game fan recreated his bedroom complete with x-box and posters with the moon traveling in the background to represent playing all night. Top right:
Skate boarder who loves street art and graffiti. His favorite artists we've covered are Shepard Fairey and Banksy.
Center left:
The two things he takes greatest pride in are his skate boarding skills and his love of Puerto Rico where his family is from.
Center right:
Originally from New Orleans he wants to move back after graduating. He remembers Katrina from when he was little and having to live with relatives. He wanted to include both the good and the bad, from his favorite food , crayfish, to the history of the south, and the loss he felt losing his first home to the hurricane.
Bottom Left:
Self proclaimed country girl dreams of travelling the world, making it to outer space, and coming home to her own little cottage and land. Bottom Right:
She loves EDM, fashion, bollywood movies, and everything else from her parent's home country of India. She can't decide between becoming a DJ or starting her own line of Indian inspired clothing.
